WAFTA AGM January 4th 2011

Just a reminder to everyone that the AGM will be held on Tuesday January 4th 2011 in the St Laurence Room at 7.30pm.
 
This is your chance to show your support for WAFTA and to voice your opinions and make any suggestions, so we hope
that as many members as possible will be there.
 
We shall also be having our traditional 'Galette Competition'with a prize for the winning entry.
For those of you who haven't entered this competition before there is a recipe at the end of this message.
 
Look forward to seeing you there, and in the meantime we hope you all have a  good New Year.
 
GALETTE RECIPE
 
Ingredients - 400g puff pastry
Filling - 100g ground almonds, 100g caster sugar, 3 egg yolks, pinch salt,
extra egg yolk to brush over pastry before baking.
Hot oven 230-250C (gas 7) or lower if using fan oven.
Divide pastry into two blocks. Roll out 2 circles of the same diameter, using
a large plate as a measure.
Line a damp flat tin with one of the circles. Mix filling ingredients to a smooth cream and
spread in centre of pastry circle. Cover with second circle, making sure edges are sealed.
Criss-cross surface with a knife, brush with beaten egg yolk and cook for 40mins.
Lower temperature during last 10 minutes.
Serve luke warm.
Alternative filling: a frangipane cream, which is a thick custard to which you add some ground
almonds and a drop of almond essence.

Thirty years of fun and friendships

For members of WAFTA, the Winslow Anglo-French Twinning Association, this year's Spring Bank Holiday will take on a special significance. They will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the twinning partnership between Winslow and Cours La Ville with a visit to France for a weekend of celebrations and presentations.

To mark this important occasion WAFTA will be presenting Cours La Ville with a traditional, red, Post Office letter box to go with the red telephone box presented to them in 1996. Cours La Ville has already presented Winslow with 50 rose bushes of a new variety of special interest to both towns. The rose, which was created in Cours La Ville, is called Mary-Ann de Lamartine and is named after the English wife of the famous French poet Alphonse de LamartinMayorse. A new rose bed has been created around the War Memorial and a fine show is expected this summer.

Winslow Fire Station to parade in France

This year is not only important for twinning but is the 150th anniversary of the Fire Service of Cours La Ville. To mark the occasion Cours La Ville has invited members of the Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service to join in the celebrations. A group from the Winslow Station will be part of the visit and will parade with their French colleagues.

Members of Winslow Judo Club will also take part in the visit and will be competing with the Cours La Ville club for the now traditional annual challenge trophy.

Since WAFTA was formed in 1980 the two towns have visited each other every year, exchanging family hospitality on an alternating basis, with language proving no barrier to involvement and enjoyment.

Lasting friendships

WAFTA Chairman Dr Gordon Wiseman said "Over the past thirty years literally thousands of people have experienced each others' customs and family life, and made lasting friendships.
